Neither Red States nor Blue States – But the United States!

Aristotle is an ancient philosopher who said, “human beings are political beings.” According to him, all of us are political beings. Indeed, we are! There may be a different degree of political elements in us, and therefore, we act and interact differently regarding politics. Some of us like politics and may want to make a career out of it. Some of us don’t like politics, mostly how politics is being played out in today’s society. Some of us are very neutral to politics due to our view points and experiences. Politics is an excellent career provided one knows how to play it and have the caliber and character to stay in the game, and steer the wheel of administration of their country in a proper manner and in the right direction. The quality of a nation is very much based on the quality of its leaders. “A good Leader a good Nation” goes the saying!

The United States of America has been ranked as one of the best in the world in its leadership, unity, and patriotism; due to the dedication and vision of our founding fathers, especially the quality of their character and personality. They built a strong foundation on human qualities such as liberty, free speech, freedom of religion, the rule of law, and above all, trust in God. We had always been enjoying this reputation in the past with the international communities across the world. There seems to be severe damage to this reputation due to the country’s recent happenings. Now we have become more color-conscious of our skin and our signs and symbols around us, even political parties. We sometimes address even different states of our country as red states or blue states.  In this process, we forget that we miss the most signifying and unifying word, “The United.” This the United, makes us who we are and who we had been as the United States of America in the past.  When we divide our country based on color, we forget that we are dividing the 50 Stars of our Nation with the same color, and they are neither blue nor red but pure white. White signifies purity, sanctity, and holiness, which was the dream and vision of our forefathers that we stay as pure, immaculate, clean, spotless, unstained, and even whiter than white itself, and thereby become a beacon of hope, promise, direction, guidance, and leadership to the rest of the world. This has been our tradition and legacy, which needs to be nourished and cherished in all the situations and circumstances today and the days to come.

” Today, we need neither red states nor blue states, but the United States of America, a Nation under God. “

Are we honestly afraid to remind ourselves if we are loyal and truthful to this tradition and legacy handed over to the citizens of this great Nation? I feel that we are losing them for the sake of the vested interests of groups or individuals around us. We are consciously or unconsciously trading them for lesser values. In our culture, communities are more prominent than individuals, and nations are more considerable than communities; therefore, any nation’s interests and identity are to be held in higher esteem than the individuals.

Today, we need neither red states nor blue states, but the United States of America, a Nation under God. Political parties and Presidents will come and go. Still, our nation as the United States of American cannot go, nor lose its values and responsibilities to its citizens and the rest of the world. They look at us for inspiration and motivation. We cannot afford to divide ourselves on account of color and politics and spread the venom of hatred, racial differences, religion, culture, and class distinction and get together as the citizens of the United States. There is healing needed in every one of us as we have been wounded in this race and battle irrespective of our political, cultural, and religious affiliations. As we are wounded, we are also called to be healers of ourselves and our neighbors. It is time to regroup ourselves under the colored flag of our Nation as white shining stars forgetting our differences and dissension, uniting us as the citizens of the United States. I join today with a great American poet Robert Frost who wrote, “Woods are lovely dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before, I sleep.” As Americans, we have miles and miles to go before we sleep to unite this Nation as the United States of America, one Nation Under God. May God bless America!

1 thought on “Neither Red States nor Blue States – But the United States!”

  1. Well said and much needed, Father Tomy. It’s been a hard time for many of us. We didn’t want to argue but often someone in front of us did. Friendships have soured over the disrespectful way we talk to each other about our leaders. I pray for my country every day. I pray for all its leaders. It’s all I know to do.
