Are You Trusting Him or Entrusting Him?

Trust and entrust.

Trust and entrust are two common vocabularies that we use interchangeably. Most of the time we are not very serious about the subtle difference it can make; especially when we deal with important matters of our lives. The most important matter in our lives is life itself. There are many things that make life very important; and one of them is our faith and belief systems, especially if we are part of an organized religion or faith group.

The word trust is something we use often in our Christian background. We claim ourselves to be people of trust and faith. For example, we trust Jesus; we trust the Scriptures, we trust the Magisterium and we trust people as well. Most of the time what we mean is that we place confidence, we rely on, we confide, and we have faith in all of the above. This is the reason why we choose to do certain things the way we do in our daily lives.

Christian lives can become failures when we trust Him and fail to entrust Him. Entrusting our lives and letting Him navigate our lives is more important than just trusting Him.

What do we mean when we say we entrust?  When we say that we are entrusting someone with something it means more than just trusting. It is a greater level of trust and confidence. It implies that there is something more than just trust. It is this greater level of trust that helps us to entrust that particular person, to guard, to manage and to make the best of what we share with that person. In our daily lives we trust many people; but we don’t trust them enough to entrust important and valuable things to their custody. We may trust our friends, but we may not entrust our checkbook or the key of the safe to our friends. Some of us may, but most of us may not!

It is a similar case in our relationship with Jesus as well. Most of the time we trust Jesus enough to know that He is capable of providing what we need to make our lives safe and secure. Therefore, we pray, obey, go to church, and practice our faith as much as we can. But we fail to entrust totally to Jesus our greatest gift, which is our lives. We are unwilling and hesitant to let our lives be entrusted to His hands, because our trust is just at the level of trusting only, and not at the level of entrusting. We often want to live our lives the way we want it. We only seek His help when and where needed. It is not an expression of entrusting but only trusting. It is like, we want to drive our own vehicle but we like to have Him near us just as a navigator in case of emergency situations for extra safety. We are not willing to let the Lord drive the vehicle of our lives; consequently, we have wrecks; endanger and damage others along the way. Entrusting means more than trusting; and letting the Lord have complete control of our vehicles and allowing Him to drive it as he knows what is best for us.

Christian lives can become failures when we trust Him and fail to entrust Him. Entrusting our lives and letting Him navigate our lives is more important than just trusting Him. Are we willing today to let Jesus drive our lives?  Do we dare to give away the keys of our lives or want to hold on to it? Make your choice reflectively and decide it diligently!

Very insightful. Worth reading more than once to fully appreciate what is being shared with us. Thank you Fr. Tomy!

  2. I’m a little confused I never thought of it that way. I always say I trust him with my life., but what do I do differently to entrust Him. Would make a good group discussion or you can guide me in what I need to do differently. Good blog today, God bless you.

  3. Thank you Fr. Tomy for distinguishing the words Trust and Entrust in spiritual perspective. I think it is the same Jesus meant when he said “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:3).
I would say entrusting God is something like rely on God in all circumstances even when things are going away from our expectation by thinking that nothing will happen in our lives without the permission and awareness of God and whatever happens in our life with God’s permission would be for our best.
